XRP Ledger Sees Brief Outage, Recovers Quickly

On February 5, 2025, the XRP Ledger (XRPL), stopped functioning and was down for about an hour. During this period, there was no production of blocks which ultimately stopped transaction processes as well. The ledger was later brought back to normal around 10:58 AM UTC.

Ripple CTO Steps In For An Explanation

Ripple CTO later explained what had exactly happened. The CTO said that the system that helps the network agree on transactions was still working, some important computer called validators stopped sharing their confirmations. This caused different parts of the network to get out of sync, leading to a temporary shutdown. Luckily, the people in charge of these validators stepped in to manually fix the issue, which helped the network get back to normal.

While the exact cause of the outage is still unknown, Schwartz stated that the network’s recovery may have been due to the manual intervention, but it’s also possible that the network self-healed. Schwartz also pointed out that this is the preliminary explanation and the team is still investigating the root cause of why this happened.

There had been no loss of fund during the outage but approximately 88,000 transactions were delayed due to the halt, but the transactions were processed swiftly once the operations went back to normal.

Critics React TO XRP Ledger Outage

In response to the outage, some of the critics questioned why banks and financial institutions that utilize XRP Ledger for cross-border payments, were not affected but it seems like the swift recovery to prevent any unverified transactions helped in minimizing the impact on these institutions.
